About the Institute of Cognitive ScienceCognitive science is the study of human knowledge, of which one aspect is the study of how knowledge is acquired, stored, and represented in the mind, including the minds underlying mechanisms. Another aspect concerns how knowledge is understood, remembered, communicated, and used in the performance of activities. The Institute of Cognitive Science (ICS) at CU-Boulder has gained an international reputation for its promotion of interdisciplinary research and training in cognitive science. The institute is known for theory development and the application of those theories to real-world problems. Research within the institute can be classified into three interdisciplinary areas, which, in turn, draw on the contributions of faculty fellows from seven participating academic units. The institute also houses three research centers, the Center for Lifelong Learning and Design (L3D) , the Computational Language and EducAtion Research (CLEAR) and the Center for Research on Training (CRT). ICS graduate programs is designed to supplement existing graduate programs in cognitive science departments and consists of a certificate program or a joint PhD program. An undergraduate certificate program is available for students majoring in psychology, philosophy, linguistics, and computer science who meet the program requirements.
